“There was something striking, almost regal, about the color combination that emerged as I built this guitar. The idea first came to me years ago when I saw a photo of a Gibson Firebird crafted from two different woods: a bright central strip and darker wings. It immediately convinced me. So when I found myself in the workshop with two padauk boards and a piece of quilted maple, I had no doubts. I dove into creating a Firebird-style guitar that carried an air of royalty, or no, perhaps something even grander. Almost… papal.”… Let’s Play

This instrument, entirely hand-built, is evidently inspired by the ultra-known shapes of the Gibson “Firebird” model. The specifications in terms of body, fingerboard, neck and nut measurements are substantially equivalent to those of the original model. The substantial difference of the version I present here, compared to the original Gibson, is the absence of the neck-thru construction system, in this case replaced by the classic set-in joint system. The banjo-type tuners shown in the photos were later replaced with a new, more suitable set from Steinberger Gearless. The fretboard custom dots are made of aluminum and padauk wood.

Imagining a colour is very hard. Remembering a colour, like the one you would like on the mahogany wings of this Firebird could seem easier, but it’s not easy at all. Until you find one, perfect and flawless, on the colour swatch book at the paint shop. And when you hear the technician say <>, then you are sure you remember colours well. Let’s play.

When Bryan asked me to make this guitar, the first thing that came to my mind was Johnny Winter and his Firebird. His albino hair and his skinny arms. Bryan instead is tall and robust and wanted one with the writing “in case of doubt, lift it up by one notch”. That of the volume on the amplifier, which increases the noise when needed. Maybe when someone in the band cannot remember the solo, he explained afterwards.
I made him create some aluminium plates eroded by acid with that writing on one side, while we did not know what to put on the other. The image of those dollars that you need to pay the bar could be ok. For the rest, nothing more than mahogany. Let’s play.
