“This instrument was conceived by one of my best clients who, over the years and after ordering several Telecaster-style models, decided to let himself be seduced by the idea of treating himself to a double f-hole Thinline — one of the two f-holes integrated into a custom-shaped pearloid pickguard. The concept of the double f-hole, as well as that of the angled bridge humbucker pickup, immediately appealed to me, and I gladly took on the challenge of building this guitar. “The tree in the photo is a common black poplar (Populus nigra), the kind you often see lining roads and fields in northern Italy, where I live and work. For centuries, it has shaped the landscape, its leaves bending to the wind before standing still again under the summer sun. It’s a tree we’ve always seen but rarely recognize for what it is—a prized tonewood, valued for the striking patterns in its grain. So well known abroad, in fact, that it earned the name ‘Lombardy Poplar’, a nod to the very region where I live and craft musical instruments.”… Let’s Play

Archtop model with nylon strings entirely made of solid quarter-sawn Lombardy black poplar. Flamed maple sides and Cedrella neck.

“While building this instrument, a phrase kept echoing in my mind—one I had heard a few times before but never fully understood. Yet, the mental connection I made with the color I needed to create turned out to be surprisingly accurate. I remembered the Tuscan city of Siena and its earthy hues, though I wasn’t sure if ‘Siena’ referred to a place, a landscape, or a product. Then it all clicked—the words in my head were ‘Lands of Siena.’ In Tuscany, this phrase describes natural pigments that range from ochre to burnt red, ending in warm yellow—shades deeply tied to the region’s countryside. An archtop model with nylon strings, inspired by the colors of Tuscany, seemed like the perfect match.”… Let’s Play

TUSCAN

“That tobacco brown colour I’ve always been looking for… That of the famous “Toscanelli” cigars that left fragrant trails along the road, loved and hated because of the intense and rather sour taste they left behind. I think I saw, when I was a boy, how they were made from the typical tobacco leaves grown in Tuscany and I think I remember perfectly the deep brown colour, veined with yellow/green flames, that characterised them. It is a colour I have often tried to reproduce and this time I think I have succeeded as never before with the procedure of dyeing flamed maple with alcohol stain. To complete the range of shades of Tuscan tobacco, a beautiful pair of indian rosewood sides. This is written, as you may have guessed, by an ex-smoker luthier.”… Let’s Play

HONEY

I wanted it honey-coloured. This Les Paul had to be light, without sunburst and with a long scale. I had never seen any. I made it and it was honey-coloured. And like it happens with honey, everybody loved it straightaway, just like the unusual cypress of the body that nobody believed in. It was loved, eaten and tastefully digested. Just like its Fender scale, after all. Let’s play.
