“Anyone wanting to build a box to store cigars would certainly use the essence of Spanish Cedar. He could not do otherwise, that’ s the rule. Its special, probably unique, ability to retain air humidity in the right way, together with its penetrating and delicious scent, make this wood unavoidable when you want the aroma of tobacco to remain unchanged over time, original in its scent. This is the rule for cigars and their perfect conservation. It is not for the construction of a soundboard of a hand-carved archtop guitar in one piece from solid wood. It is not the standard not to use resonance spruce except when it is the smell, even before conceiving the instrument to be built, that reminds you how satisfying it can be to smoke a cigar, even for those who have never tasted one. The instrument that I have built and that I present here is made with soundboard and back in Spanish Cedar, hand carved from solid wood. The boards, in this case, are made from a single piece and therefore not joined. Parallel chain. Flamed maple sides, Spanish Cedar neck, ebony fretboard. Medium jumbo frets. All the archtop models presented on these pages are completely handmade by luthier Emanuele D’Alò, owner of the brand Shank Instruments. The instruments are built according to the principles of the Robert Benedetto method and both the soundboards and the backs are handmade from solid wood boards.
